Registering at your address takes an afternoon and unlocks more than people realise. Here is what it is for.
The padrón municipal is the town hall's register of who lives where. It is not a residence permit and it says nothing about your tax status — it simply records an address.
What it gets you
- A doctor at your local health centre
- A school place for your children
- Resident discounts on flights and ferries to the mainland
- The paperwork most banks want before they open an account
What you need
Passport or NIE, your rental contract, and in most municipalities a recent utility bill. Some ask for a signed letter from the landlord. Book the appointment online — walking in rarely works in Palma.
