Choosing a neighbourhood in Palma
Santa Catalina, the old town, El Terreno, Son Espanyolet — how they actually differ once you live there.
Palma is small enough to cross on foot and varied enough that the wrong choice will grate within a month.
Santa Catalina
The market, the restaurants, the noise. Excellent if you want to walk everywhere and do not mind a busy Friday night. Parking is a genuine problem.
The old town
Beautiful, quiet after nine, and full of buildings that were never designed for cars or lifts. Check which floor and whether there is a lift before you fall in love with the photographs.
El Terreno
Steep, green, a little faded, with views most people would pay a lot more for. It has been about to become fashionable for twenty years.
Son Espanyolet
Low houses, families, a proper neighbourhood feel. Ten minutes from Santa Catalina without the weekend traffic.
